Lauren Spierer arrived at Indiana University Bloomington’s campus with stars in her eyes and butterflies in her stomach. College is a transition for anyone, but unlike most, she was not wholly stepping in blind.

Lauren was already familiar with some of her classmates–including her roommate– thanks to her time at Camp Towanda, a Pennsylvania summer camp she had attended since age 10. During one of her final trips, she met Jesse Wolff, a slightly older camper from Long Island. The two fell into a camp romance which evolved into a serious relationship. Like Lauren, Jesse would become a student at IU, albeit a few years above her.

The main reason she chose IU was itslarge but close-knit Jewish population. Lauren was always confident in her Jewish identity; she was a part of the campus Hillel and Jewish National Fund.

“[Lauren] was a great kid,” Rob Spierer, her father, told ABC’s 20/20. “We’re very proud parents.”
