911 dispatchers are trained to deal with those in a state of panic, anger, delusion, and even intoxication. It’s a remarkably stressful job, as dispatchers only hold their words to ease distressed callers until emergency services arrive. So when 28-year-old Heather Cameron told her dispatcher she had been drugged and was being pursued by an attacker, their training was put to the test.

It was difficult to decipher the young mother’s pleas. Wherever Heather was calling from had poor cell reception; the phone static drowned out her fearful voice. The dispatcher also heard a male voice in the background, but the erratic connection made it impossible to forge his words together. After two dropped calls, Heather called a final time to reiterate her requests for help. Like the others, the call dropped once again.

The dispatcher deduced there was a probable cause of concern for Heather’s safety and sent emergency services to Heather’s location. Heather had called from the remote area of Keswick Dam in Shasta County, California. Her precise location was notably isolated, which explained the poor cell service.
